Biography
Lyria is a Professor and Head of the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law and Justice at UNSW Sydney. Lyria's research explores issues around the relationship between technology and law, including the types of legal issues that arise as technology changes, how these issues are addressed in Australia and other jurisdictions, and the problems of treating “technology” as an object of regulation. She has been working on legal and policy issues associated with the use of artificial intelligence, and has recently co-authored a text Artificial Intelligence, Robots and the Law (2nd ed 2025 LexisNexis) with Michael Guihot. She co-led the Law and Policy theme in the recent Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre and continues to explore issues around trustworthy data sharing through the UNSW-UTS Trustworthy Digital Society Hub, in particular around the legal framework for data sharing and data spaces. Lyria is a member of the editorial boards for Technology and Regulation; Law, Technology and Humans; Journal of Cross-Disciplinary Research in Computational Law; and Law in Context. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Australian Academy of Law and the Royal Society of NSW and sits as an expert on the Australian mirror committee for ISO/IEC JTC1 standards for artificial intelligence.
